Excursions from Marrakech
Marrakech, founded in the 11th century, has always fascinated Western travelers with its exotic spirit. This city, once a crossroads for caravans, is famous for its markets where local handicrafts and typical products of southern tribes and Berbers are sold. Marrakech is a city of extraordinary beauty: its monuments are tinged with a warm ochre color at sunset, creating an unforgettable spectacle. From here, excursions can be arranged to the Ourika Valley, Asni, the Middle Atlas Falls, and Ait Ben Haddou, making for an unmissable trip. Adventure with us and discover beautiful valleys and landscapes dotted with picturesque Berber villages.
Day excursion from Marrakech to Essaouira
After breakfast, depart with your driver to the coastal town of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, located about 190 km from Marrakech. Once you arrive, you will have the entire day free to explore this fascinating location. Essaouira is most famous for its Medina, overlooking the sea and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town impresses with its imposing fortress, characteristic white walls, and relaxed atmosphere among its artisan stores, giving it a unique charm with a European flavor. The coast, buffeted almost year-round by ocean breezes and trade winds, is a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers. We recommend a visit to the souk area and don’t miss the opportunity to explore the port of Essaouira, where you can observe the shipyards, the bustling bustle of fishing boats, and the pier that comes alive with the fish market as the fishermen return. For lunch, we suggest you stop near the port to enjoy delicious dishes of freshly caught fish. Return to Marrakech in the evening.
From Marrakech to the Ourika Valley
After breakfast, at 8 a.m., we will set off on an excursion to the Atlas Mountains, about an hour away from Marrakech. The day will be devoted to visiting picturesque High Atlas villages, including Ourika and Setti Fatma, located along the main Ait Ourir road. En route, we will make stops at the main viewpoints to take photos and admire the picturesque landscapes. We will reach the Ourika valley, where we will undertake a trek to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, crossing streams and discovering life in Berber villages. You will be able to explore the work of local artisans, who create artifacts such as stained glass, tin lanterns, furniture and hand-paintings similar to those you will find in the souks of Marrakech. You will also have the opportunity to follow a path used by Berbers to travel to the market on their donkeys. Lunch will be at a local restaurant next to the valley, where you will enjoy typical dishes while admiring the Atlas Mountains. Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
From Marrakech to the Ouzoud Falls
We will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 am to visit 2 of the great natural wonders of southern Morocco. Begin the journey, which will take about 2 1/2 hours, enjoying the views as you head northeast to the village of Tanaghmeilt in the Atlas Mountains, passing through deserted hills, palm groves, and old villages.
The Ouzoud Falls are among the highest natural waterfalls in North Africa; the name means “grain mill” in the Berber language. Upon arrival you will see small rustic Berber hotels, restaurants and stalls offering food cooked in tagines placed on open-air charcoal stoves.
Here you will meet your local guide to take a walking tour of about an hour and a half. Listen to the roar of the falls as you take wonderful photos and get lost in watching the shimmering rainbows form around the swooping waters. Finally, we will descend the steps to explore the caves where water mills grind grain to produce flour. During this stop there is an opportunity to swim or cross the river on one of the small rafts to see the falls from a different point.
After your walk you will have free time to visit the many stalls and craft stores along the river and, if you wish, to have a relaxing lunch, followed by a cafe overlooking the falls where, sometimes, if you are lucky, you will be able to spot the local Barbary monkeys. On our return journey we will stop at the small Berber town of Demnate, and then continue on to Imi n’Ifri, where a naturally formed rock bridge connects to a complex system of underground caves, a great place to take spectacular photos because of the views of striking vistas offered by the gorge below. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon/early evening.
To Ait ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
On this day trip you will cross the High Atlas range completely from the Tizi n’Tichka pass, passing on the highest road in Africa, you will see the mountains of beautiful and traditional Berber villages. You will notice the difference between the two sides of the chain: the north retains a clear Mediterranean character, while the south is much more arid and Saharan. This difference is emphasized by the vegetation, but also by the way traditional dwellings are built, taking into account the very different climatic conditions.
Excursions from Fez
We have selected for you some of the best day trips and sightseeing tours departing from Fes, includes fascinating destinations such as the picturesque Chefchaouen, known as the “blue city,” nestled between the Rif mountains; historic Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis; the striking Atlas Mountains; pretty Ifrane, often called the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco; the Berber village of Azrou and the majestic cedar forests; and the enchanting Sefrou Falls. There are numerous options that can be customized to meet your needs and desires, making your stay in Fes not only easy, but also unforgettable!
Excursion to Volubilis
Volubilis is an ancient Roman city located about 33 km north of Meknes. This vast archaeological area, covering 40 hectares, is home to some of the best-preserved Roman remains in Morocco. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Volubilis offers visitors the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll through its ancient ruins, exploring the forum, basilica, temple of Jupiter, baths, Caracalla Arch, and admiring the splendid mosaics. An optional guided tour is available to further enrich the experience.
Excursion to Meknes
Meknes, is, compared to the other imperial cities of Rabat, Marrakech, and Fes, the calmest and most relaxing. Completely surrounded by cultivated fields, it is in fact agricultural production, the major source of this city’s livelihood. Curious from what you might think in a Muslim country such as Morocco, where the use of alcohol is prohibited, Meknes is also the largest producer of wine in the entire region. In Meknes you can visit in addition to its colorful souqs, el-Hedim Square, which is somewhat like Marrakech’s Jamaa el-Fna, the Dar Jamai Museum, the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, and the Bouanania madrassa.
Excursion to Ifrane
Ifrane is a charming mountain village located about 65 km south of Fes. Known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its particularly neat and clean appearance, numerous parks, lakes, and alpine-style houses, Ifrane is a popular tourist resort. Founded by the French in 1930, it is a coveted summer destination for affluent Moroccans and a popular ski destination in winter. Among the must-see attractions is the majestic stone lion, carved by a German soldier during World War II in honor of the last lion of the Atlas Mountains. The prestigious Al-Akhawayn University and the exterior of the Royal Palace are also worth a visit.
Excursion to Azrou and the Cedar Forest
Azrou, located in the heart of the Middle Atlas, is renowned not only for its Berber population but especially for its enchanting cedar forests that surround it. With a population of about 50,000, Azrou is famous for the “Great Cedar Gouraud,” a majestic thousand-year-old cedar, the largest in the region. Although it sadly died a few years ago due to a processionary moth invasion, its charm remains intact. A few meters from the Cedar Gouraud, you will find stalls where you can buy souvenirs, drinks and peanuts, perfect for feeding the cute bertucas, the little monkeys that populate the area. You can also visit the small medina, full of stores and local craft workshops, where you can admire wood carvings and traditional carpets.
